Feoh

Runes in the World of the Vikings:
In former times runes were utilized by the northern people as a magic language. They were used to write down messages as well as to prepare talismans and charms which were needed for telling the future and other magic rituals.
In old northern languages the word rune means secret, concealed law and magic sign.
Runemasters normally carried a wooden stick with a bronze head, in which rune signs were carved, as a symbol of their power and status. One could furthermore recognize them by their deep blue capes and their amulet bags made of leather they carried on their belts. The profession of a runemaster could be chosen by men as well as by women - they were, second to the leader of the village, the most important members of the community.
Each pendant of this rune collection comes with a black cord, was inspired by the natural shape of rocks and is made of lead-free pewter, which is associated with earth.

The Meaning of the Rune Feoh:
The name of this rune literally means "gold" and therefore it is supposed to bring wealth and luck into life - but naturally, together with this riches there also comes the responsibility to apply them in a useful manner. Feoh is able to increase creative and magic energies or to attract them from the surrounding and therefore it is very useful in order to reach self set goals. The shape of this rune reminds of a flickering flame or a tree from a dense wood - hence according to Celtic belief Feoh also stood for dangers like a blaze or a wolf in the woods which had to be conquered on the way to one's own goals.

Example of a Rune Spell from a Grimoire of White Magic:
1. Purificatio (Cleaning):
In order to clear all adhering energy frequencies the rune should be covered with salt and kept overnight in a safe place before it is charged with energy.
2. Preparatio (Preparation):
Keep ready incense, a compass and a white candle and cover a table with a white cloth in a quiet room. In order to easily absorb the energies of this earth ritual the rune should perferably be made of a metal, which is associated with earth.
Black out the room and take care that you will not be disturbed: Place yourself with the help of your compass in front of the table so that you face north, since the power of our Mother Earth flows from the northern direction. Put the incense and the white candle in the middle of the table, ignite both and place the rune next to them.
3. Potestatem Facere (Charging):
Close your eyes, hold your hands above the rune and meditate for a while over its meaning. Now send the power of your thoughts through your hands into the piece of jewelry and then deeper into the earth, penetrate the surface, wander through the realm of rocks and roots until you have reached the centre of Mother Earth. Feel the fiery energy of the element earth in front of your inner eye then drag it upwards into your body - now feel the heat in your body and take the rune in your hands. The pendant will absorb the whole earth energy until it completely vanishes from your body - during this once again reflect over the meaning of this rune.
4. Salvatio (Reorientation):
Have a meal and recover for a short while in order to bring your body back to this world.

About us

AvalonsTreasury.com: Arrow, Mist (Page: Feoh) [136 x 22 px]
We were always fascinated by pieces of jewelry designed according to historical artwork and magical and other old motifs are a main area of our jewelry collection until today. Nowadays we all are surrounded by designs and motifs from all over the world which we usually choose according to visual aspects without considering the original meaning and symbolism of the various depictions. For sure the beauty of the different designs and materials is a good reason for selecting them but the affinity to a special piece of jewelry or art craft can be enhanced if one knows its deeper meaning and its origin. For this reason we always placed value on the accurate representation and information explaining the various pieces of jewelry in our collection.

Since the beginning of mankind jewelry served several different purposes. Already before the invention of money it was for example used as a kind of currency, as a status symbol or as a valuable asset that even could be passed on to future generations. Many pieces of jewelry also had a functional purpose like it is the case with fastenings for clothes, safety pins and belt buckles. However, at a more spiritual level the jewelry also had a symbolic meaning, showed the affiliation to and the status in a social group, and was worn for the protection from evil or simply to show one's own taste.

On account of these many different purposes the meaning of single pieces of jewelry can be very different and depends on the belief and the point of view of the respective manufacturer. In some cultures, e.g., bracelets were used as wedding jewelry, like the wedding rings of today, in other societies necklaces served the same purpose. The symbolic meaning of a piece of jewelry often cannot only be found in the piece itself, but also in its decorations or the used materials. In some cultures it is usual to give pieces of jewelry as a gift at certain important times in life which should emphasize the symbolic meaning of these events with the help of their decorations. These pieces were then often worn as amulets or talismans and were believed to protect and support its wearer during this new situation in life.

Not only the used symbols and decorations differ strongly between the cultures - a huge number of different materials were also used in the course of time. In the beginnings especially shells and pearls of wood and bone were used, because these natural materials were readily available and could easily be processed. Later the precious metals silver and gold became more and more important and also the use of precious stones increased. Nowadays all possible materials are used to underline the meaning of a piece of jewelry even further thereby creating pendants and other jewelry that could not be designed using traditional materials.
