This medieval talisman evokes the power of Mercury, the messenger of the gods. The Roman god Mercury corresponds with the Greek messenger of the gods Hermes who is symbolized by the caduceus in the center of this charm. The staff has two wings at its upper end indicating the speed at which Hermes/Mercury travels and also displays the astrological symbol of planet Mercury at its top. Furthermore it shows two snakes entwining it in perfect symmetry and standing for healing powers and health. To the left and right side the alchemical signs for air and earth are shown, indicating that Mercury never touches ground with his feet but levitates from place to place. Just below these symbols the astrological signs for gemini and virgo are placed, which are both ruled by planet Mercury. Because of Mercury being considered extraordinary quick and mentally alert this talisman was worn in former times to increase one's own mental powers. The term talisman originates from the ancient Greek word teleo which means "to initiate" or "to magically charge".

This pendant is made of copper and brass with a framing made of pewter. The brass, a copper zinc alloy, is responsible for the yellow golden parts of this piece of jewelry and the copper for the red golden ones. With the exception of gold copper is the only colored metal and just like silver and gold it is classified as a precious metal. The framing of this pendant is made of pewter, since pewter is a shiny, soft metal which is very malleable and has a good tarnish resistance.
