Celtic Birth Charms: 16 - Heulsaf Y Gaeaf
The Celts were early conservationists, because they strongly believed that every part of the scenery holds its own life and should be considered as holy. They settled in Europe from 800 B.C. to 900 A.D. and their civilization has been based on the belief in a magically animated earth and its relation to the own clan or tribe.
The cycle of agriculture was vital for the Celtic culture and the festivals which were celebrated during the year were especially important to those who were born shortly before a certain festive day because they took a leading role in this particular festival. Birthdays therefore in general had a very important meaning and many Celtic legends referred to the birth of deities and heroes and the Celts were convinced that they shared the supernatural powers of these mythological beings if they had the luck to be born on their birthday. In their magic system the darkness of night brought the Celts closer to the mysterious Otherworld, where gods, goddesses, fairies and the dead exist. The natural attributes being inherent in a certain time of day or season, were respected by the Celts just as much as they observed which plants, animals and weather conditions were connected with a certain period because in that way they defined the special abilities of newborn children and predicted the future.
The Celtic birth charms of this collection can either be worn to stress your own Celtic birthday, or if another pendant is chosen, to manifest its spirit within you. In former times magic birth pendants were worn by the Celts to influence destiny and to emphasize personal traits, just as astrological jewelry is used by a lot of people today.
Heulsaf Y Gaeaf: People whose birthday falls between the 10th and the 31st of December are born under the Celtic sign of Heulsaf Y Gaeaf (Midwinter). During this Christmas time the old rite still exists to kiss each other under the mistletoe. People born under this sign therefore are believed to have an especially strong attractiveness towards others and a very taking character. During the time of Modwinter the Druids collected, on the 6th day of the moon-cycle, their holy mistletoes in the woods. The strength of the mistletoe was brought in connection with the full moon, now reigning the long cold nights after the end of the short winter days.

A main focus of our jewelry collections are magic symbols which are made according to historical artwork. Although a lot of people (like us) appreciate the beauty of the different designs and used materials, only few think about the deeper symbolism of these pieces of jewelry. In our modern world we see so a many different beautiful and decorative items that we usually only enjoy their beauty without considering the deeper meaning or the origin of the used motives and without knowing for what reason these items were formerly used. In our online shop we want to give answers to these questions by offering accurate background knowledge and additional information about every piece of jewelry in our collection.
Since the beginning of mankind jewelry served several different purposes. Already before the invention of money it was for example used as a kind of currency, as a status symbol or as a valuable asset that even could be passed on to future generations. Many pieces of jewelry also had a functional purpose like it is the case with fastenings for clothes, safety pins and belt buckles. However, at a more spiritual level the jewelry also had a symbolic meaning, showed the affiliation to and the status in a social group, and was worn for the protection from evil or simply to show one's own taste.
Since jewelry is such a diverse cultural asset the meaning of a given piece can depend on the point of view and beliefs of its creator. For example many cultures developed pieces of jewelry showing to others whether its wearer is married or single: In our Western world these are the wedding rings while in African countries e.g. special bracelets or necklaces are worn for this purpose. Whether we are talking about weddings jewelry or talismans and amulets that were used for protection - often the decorations and materials determine the symbolic meaning of a piece of jewelry.
Besides the various symbols and designs different cultures use for their pieces of jewelry also a variety of materials are deployed in jewelry production. At the beginning of mankind primarily pearls made of wood and bones and shells were crafted to pendants, since these rather soft materials could easily be processed and were readily available. Later on especially precious metals like gold and silver and various gems were used for valuable jewelry. Today the selection of materials available for the production of jewelry is especially large and various.
Also the piece of jewelry on this page http://www.aval
f-LH-BC16.html shows a unique combination of material and symbolism. This is the information about our website and this page if you want to point to it:
