Medieval Fortune Charm for Love and Friendship

Pendant

According to old belief amulets and talismans are tools to trigger changes in life. In order to achieve this talismans transfer positive powers while amulets grant protection by absorbing negative energies. Old grimoires contain instructions on how to build amulets and talismans in a way so that they can use positive planetary energies to fulfil their purpose.
The biblical king Solomon established the Jewish secret doctrine of Kabbalah and wrote the magic book "Key of Solomon" 3000 years ago - also this talisman is built according to these magic instructions. The wisdom of Solomon until today is the foundation of all western magic.
This old talisman originates from the "Key of Solomon" - in medieval times this charm has been extended using Christian symbols. It shows a knight's sword with a ribbon wrapped around by his love just before tournament or battle to devote herself to him: This knight is literally tied up by his truelove and the warrior's initials are framed by this ribbon of love. Although the noble lady cannot take part in the battle, she has power over her knight: He is not able to escape from her love anymore and if he should be victorious, she will be his forever. This medieval fortune charm was worn to find a fortunate love or an honest friendship and to enhance permanence in these partnerships. Moreover the talisman is said to protect against infidelity, flightiness and doubts about ones beloved one.
Among other things medieval knights of the 16th century carried this magic talisman as a fortune charm on their belts. It was popular because according to old belief it was not necessary to charge these kabbalalistic pendants - the correct choice of symbols and materials was everything needed for the talisman to work, The knights therefore used this pendant not only as jewelry but also as an aid to achieve changes in their lives.

This pendant is made of brass and copper. With the exception of gold copper is the only colored metal and just like silver and gold it is classified as a precious metal. Due to its softness and malleableness copper is particularly suitable for the jewelry production. The brass, a copper zinc alloy, is responsible for the yellow golden parts of this piece of jewelry and the copper for the red golden ones.

About us

AvalonsTreasury.com: Arrow, Mist (Page: Medieval Fortune Charm for Friendship) [136 x 22 px]
We were always fascinated by pieces of jewelry designed according to historical artwork and magical and other old motifs are a main area of our jewelry collection until today. Nowadays we all are surrounded by designs and motifs from all over the world which we usually choose according to visual aspects without considering the original meaning and symbolism of the various depictions. For sure the beauty of the different designs and materials is a good reason for selecting them but the affinity to a special piece of jewelry or art craft can be enhanced if one knows its deeper meaning and its origin. For this reason we always placed value on the accurate representation and information explaining the various pieces of jewelry in our collection.

Since the beginning of mankind jewelry served several different purposes. Already before the invention of money it was for example used as a kind of currency, as a status symbol or as a valuable asset that even could be passed on to future generations. Many pieces of jewelry also had a functional purpose like it is the case with fastenings for clothes, safety pins and belt buckles. However, at a more spiritual level the jewelry also had a symbolic meaning, showed the affiliation to and the status in a social group, and was worn for the protection from evil or simply to show one's own taste.

On account of these many different purposes the meaning of single pieces of jewelry can be very different and depends on the belief and the point of view of the respective manufacturer. In some cultures, e.g., bracelets were used as wedding jewelry, like the wedding rings of today, in other societies necklaces served the same purpose. The symbolic meaning of a piece of jewelry often cannot only be found in the piece itself, but also in its decorations or the used materials. In some cultures it is usual to give pieces of jewelry as a gift at certain important times in life which should emphasize the symbolic meaning of these events with the help of their decorations. These pieces were then often worn as amulets or talismans and were believed to protect and support its wearer during this new situation in life.

Not only the used symbols and decorations differ strongly between the cultures - a huge number of different materials were also used in the course of time. In the beginnings especially shells and pearls of wood and bone were used, because these natural materials were readily available and could easily be processed. Later the precious metals silver and gold became more and more important and also the use of precious stones increased. Nowadays all possible materials are used to underline the meaning of a piece of jewelry even further thereby creating pendants and other jewelry that could not be designed using traditional materials.
