Wheel of Arianrhod

Pendant, small

The famous Celts were the legendary ancestors of the Englishmen who passed on most of their stories and myths only by oral tradition, so that only pieces of their legends and tales lasted till today. The most we know about them comes from their objects of art they left behind - cave paintings, items consisting of metal and in rare cases famous writings like the Book of Kells tell about a big culture.
Celtic art made its way from England and Ireland to Europe in the years from 100 B.C. to 900 A.D. The most popular motives were animals, spirals, knots, key patterns and intertwined figures, all symbols of Celtic religion and their belief in magic, unity, eternity and the endless cycle of life, death and rebirth. For the Celts the material and the spiritual world were merging seamlessly, because they saw no difference between natural and supernatural reality and magic was an inherent part of every day life.
Horses were an important part of the Celtic culture and the Welsh Goddess of Horses Rhiannon was therefore especially worshipped - her name is derived from Rigantona meaning "The Great High Queen". Stories about Rhiannon can be found in the medieval collection of legends Mabinogion and according to ancient belief the blessings of Rhiannon are said to grant fertility and abundance.
This piece of jewelry was inspired by Celtic art and magic and is dedicated to the legends of Rhiannon - it therefore possesses qualities that were admired by the ancient Celts and that they wanted to attract into their lifes by wearing similar charms and talismans. Jewelry of this collection therefore can enrich and transform our life since the Celtic magic of the goddess Rhiannon is potent until today.

About us

AvalonsTreasury.com: Arrow, Mist (Page: Wheel of Arianrhod) [136 x 22 px]
We were always fascinated by pieces of jewelry designed according to historical artwork and magical and other old motifs are a main area of our jewelry collection until today. Nowadays we all are surrounded by designs and motifs from all over the world which we usually choose according to visual aspects without considering the original meaning and symbolism of the various depictions. For sure the beauty of the different designs and materials is a good reason for selecting them but the affinity to a special piece of jewelry or art craft can be enhanced if one knows its deeper meaning and its origin. For this reason we always placed value on the accurate representation and information explaining the various pieces of jewelry in our collection.

Since the beginning of mankind jewelry served several different purposes. Already before the invention of money it was for example used as a kind of currency, as a status symbol or as a valuable asset that even could be passed on to future generations. Many pieces of jewelry also had a functional purpose like it is the case with fastenings for clothes, safety pins and belt buckles. However, at a more spiritual level the jewelry also had a symbolic meaning, showed the affiliation to and the status in a social group, and was worn for the protection from evil or simply to show one's own taste.

On account of these many different purposes the meaning of single pieces of jewelry can be very different and depends on the belief and the point of view of the respective manufacturer. In some cultures, e.g., bracelets were used as wedding jewelry, like the wedding rings of today, in other societies necklaces served the same purpose. The symbolic meaning of a piece of jewelry often cannot only be found in the piece itself, but also in its decorations or the used materials. In some cultures it is usual to give pieces of jewelry as a gift at certain important times in life which should emphasize the symbolic meaning of these events with the help of their decorations. These pieces were then often worn as amulets or talismans and were believed to protect and support its wearer during this new situation in life.

Besides the various symbols and designs different cultures use for their pieces of jewelry also a variety of materials are deployed in jewelry production. At the beginning of mankind primarily pearls made of wood and bones and shells were crafted to pendants, since these rather soft materials could easily be processed and were readily available. Later on especially precious metals like gold and silver and various gems were used for valuable jewelry. Today the selection of materials available for the production of jewelry is especially large and various.
